Julian Campbell
Wine Merchant & Writer
Jules Campbell - Born in Brazil, raised on a diet of English public school, expat parents, school holidays in Hong Kong and then Sri Lanka, Jules always displayed an aptitude for eating and drinking well. Perhaps it was the early introduction to the joys of Asian and Sub-Continental cooking and the sweet sticky smells of the east that gave him the early preparation and stimulus needed for a life spent looking through his nose and trying to see with his mouth. Or perhaps he’s just greedy. It wasn’t long before the joys of wine were discovered. It was 1981 Cheval Blanc, commandeered from his stepfathers cellar and drunk late night with his friend John when the cider had run out. It was so good they opened a second bottle. It was his revelatory moment, and the first step in his becoming somewhat obsessed with the stuff. A life in the trade beckoned. Now working for one of Londons leading wine merchants Jules has ample opportunity to continue the journey that began with that bottle of ‘81. He writes an occasional blog, has appeared on Radio 2, delights in ripe tannins, savoury aromas , delicacy, detail and clarity. Above all he’s looking for wines that uplift and enlighten.
